Micky Barron is confident that the fitness work the players have been putting in during pre season will stand them in good stead for the long and testing campaign.
The Reserve Team Coach oversaw a strong 3-1 win over Northern League outfit Bishop Auckland on Wednesday night in which more of the squad were given ninety minutes on the pitch.
And Barron is sure that being one of the fittest teams in League One can prove an asset when things get underway next weekend.
"I thought that our lads looked really fit again on Wednesday night which is important and overall it was just a really solid pre season run out," he commented.
"I thought Bishop Auckland gave us a great test; they had some good players, they were strong and physical so it was exactly what we were looking for.
"We wanted the senior professionals to have ninety minutes, and most of them came through that unscathed and still looked to be going strong at the end which is great.
"We've not really had any bad injuries that have kept people out so far, so fingers crossed that it continues that way.
"The lads are working really hard - they're still complaining that they have to come in too early but I'm sure when the season starts they'll get a few extra minutes in bed!
"The fitness side is looking strong and I think the fooball is coming along well too, because we played some good stuff on Wednesday night and in previous games."
