Scott Fenwick grabbed the only goal of the game on a rainy night at Victoria Park as Pools took the three points from Newport County.
Terry Butcher’s side pushed Pools all the way but Ronnie Moore’s side dug in and snatched victory with a brilliant second-half strike from Fenwick.
It was a quiet first half from Pools who struggled to break down an energetic and enthusiastic Newport County side.
The visitors had the first shot of the game after just two minutes when Seth Twumasi broke through to shoot from the edge of the box; his shot dipped down at goal but landed just the other side of Adam Bartlett’s bar.
Newport County had the greater share of possession and the young side zipped the ball about nicely in the first half, leaving Pools to chase for much of the time.
The opposition stretched Pools down the right hand side on 17 minutes, carving an opening which ended when Mark Byrne saw his effort rise just over the bar as they went close again.
Pools had their only shot of the first half on 24 minutes as Rakish Bingham sent a shot from outside the box over the bar but other than that, Ronnie Moore’s side did little to test Joe Day in the visiting goal before the game.
Scott Boden burst forward to send a low shot through a crowd but his effort deflected into the arms of Bartlett.
While Newport had the greater share of possession, there was little more action required of Bartlett in the first half as much of their dominance came in the middle third.
The first half finished goalless and Pools went into the break needing a spark in the second forty five to get this game going.
And the spark arrived in the 51st minute thanks to Scott Fenwick; the striker pushed through at goal to send an unstoppable strike past Day from 20 yards to give Pools a 1-0 lead.
Rakish Bingham hit a great volley at goal to test the visiting keeper just after the hour mark but the Newport keeper pulled off a decent block to put it wide for a corner.
The goal didn’t stop the pressure at the other end for Moore’s side as Newport County continued to plug away, looking to find a gap in the Pools defence.
Mark Byrne was lively for County, while Scott Boden and Aaron Collins worked hard up front – all ensuring Pools could not allow themselves to switch off for a second. Adam Bartlett had to be alert to collect a fierce strike from distance from Collins, which arrived at speed into the box.
Scott Fenwick had another chance just before he made way for Rhys Oates; after good play by Woods, Billy Paynter fed it through to Fenwick who took it onto his chest before launching a shot which went wide of the far post.
Billy Paynter saw an effort from close range cleared off the line after he had skipped past a few defenders – just missing out on the opportunity to equal a 50-year-old Club record for scoring goals in the opening four fixtures of a season.
It was a nervy finish as Newport battled to the end but Pools took the points, their fourth successive victory of the season.
