Pools Take Points From Daggers Match

Colin Cooper's side picked up all three hard-earned points in a competitive game with Dagenham & Redbridge.

Pools showed no hangover from the narrow defeat at Scunthorpe United last weekend as they burst out of the blocks here at The Vic this afternoon.

With James Poole and Luke James setting the tone for the full team with their constant running and chasing, the players were looking hungry for victory and made things very difficult for the visitors.

Matty Dolan was another seeing plenty of the ball, pushing forward and encouraging the attack whenever he picked up possession, while Dagenham struggled to get the ball out of their own area for much of the first half as Cooper’s men forced everything back at them.

And with 12 minutes on the clock, Pools took a well-deserved lead through James Poole. Michael Duckworth showed typical determination to push forward down the right before smashing an effort at goal. He saw his shot fall into the path of Luke James, who sent an angled strike across goal and Poole popped up at the far post to poke home.

As Pools continued to press, Simon Walton and Matty Dolan made the most of a corner with some great movement, allowing Walton to smash an effort at goal from the edge of the box, which Chris Lewington did well to keep out.

At the other end Scott Flinders, who had seen little of the ball so far, pulled off a great save to his right from Medy Elito who broke through to go one-on-one with the Pools’ keeper.

Jack Baldwin got himself in a great position to brilliantly clear a goalbound Zavon Hines shot on goal after the striker had found good space inside the box but Pools were soon back on the attack

A Dolan freekick went just wide of the far post, while Jonathan Franks tested the visitors with a couple of decent crosses from the right.

Pools had been the more dominant in this opening half and took a 1-0 lead into half time but there was still plenty more to do after the break against an in-form Dagenham side.

Cooper’s men started the second half just as brightly, enjoying the majority of possession and continuing their levels of pressure.

But an individual effort from Zavon Hines brought the visitors back into the game; the striker burst in from the right to send a ferocious left-footed strike past the helpless Flinders and into the far corner of the net.

The game really opened up after the goal, with strong chances at both ends; Neil Austin put in a fantastic and courageous block to send a close-range effort over the bar after the Daggers top scorer Ryhs Murphy had broken through.

Flinders’ opposite number pulled off a great save to deny Duckworth who had arrived to fire a Monkhouse pass at goal, before the Pools keeper was called back into action – this time diving at full-stretch to keep a deflection out of the net.

Sub Antony Sweeney headed the ball down to James inside the box as Pools took their turn to look for a second but the young striker sent his shot wide.

But once again, Pools showed the confidence and determination amongst the squad at the moment to re-take the lead.

After a great spell of pressure from Cooper’s men, Matty Dolan took a perfectly-placed corner kick to pick out a towering Andy Monkhouse in the box and the winger made no mistake as he rose to nod home, making it 2-1.

There was a dangerous moment for Pools as Burgess was adjudged to have handled just outside the box. Billy Bingham stepped up to take the free kick and sent a powerful one through the box but Pools’ stopper Scott Flinders pulled off yet another save to keep the ball out and keep his side ahead.

And so Pools bounced straight back to win their third successive home match against a Dagenham side who had not lost away from home since August.
