Pools picked up their first point of the 2013/14 League Two campaign after playing out a 0-0 draw with York City this afternoon.
The travelling army of 1714 Pools' fans saw their side enjoy plenty of possession without finding that killer touch in the final third to force a goal.
And, with the hosts suffering similar problems in the attacking third, the game finished 0-0.
There was an early penalty shout for Pools as Steve Howard was tripped running in on goal but the referee was well-placed and insisted the challenge was outside of the area despite strong protest from Pools.
Howard, who was heavily involved for Pools this afternoon, sent a great ball forward for James Poole to run onto down the right channel. And the lively forward did well to twist his way into space before sending a ball across goal which won Pools their first corner of the game.
Poole and Howard were linking up nicely for Cooper’s side, creating the best of the openings of the first half but nothing clear-cut was forthcoming.
On the whole though, Pools adopted a positive approach to the game today, looking to force themselves forward and take a hold of the game.
There was a scary moment at the back for Pools when Scott Flinders came out to collect a free-kick floated into his area but the big keeper failed to get there and the ball glanced off Jack Baldwin and seemed to be rolling in to the net before a timely intervention from Neil Austin to clear off the line.
At the other end, as Pools took their turn to attack, Andy Monkhouse found Poole with a neat ball in behind and latter again pushed his way in from the right. This time his shot flashed across goal and just wide of the far post but it was a decent chance for the forward.
The first half finished quite evenly matched both in terms of scoreline and possession so the sides went into the second with plenty to do to take the points.
The second half proved to be more of a scrappy affair as the hosts enjoyed the early pressure but for all of their possession, there was little to really test Scott Flinders - with a crucial block from Christian Burgess and a strong header from Baldwin keeping things tight.
Brad Walker showed a great touch to steal possession inside his own half and power forward with the ball; with Jack Compton in his sights, Walker sent a lovely ball right across the pitch to pick out his teammate. And, with Compton looking perfectly-placed when running in, it looked set to be Pools’ best chance on goal but the winger sent a wild effort wide of the near post.
The hosts were soon back on the attack, again testing the Pools defensive line without really troubling Flinders. Christian Burgess in particular was strong this afternoon, providing a calm and solid presence for Cooper’s men at the back.
But it was soon Pools who were well on top; a Darren Holden long-throw was headed on by Steve Howard only to be cleared at the back post by a York defender in while moments later sub Luke James set up another chance for Pools.
The youngster battled away from his man to burst forward towards the box, squaring for Howard who in turn fed Monkhouse. As the wave of attack continued, Monkhouse played it out to Compton arriving down the left and after seeing his first cross returned to him, Compton was denied by a great challenge from Lanre Oyebanjo.
James was instrumental again as he forced Pools forward and after finding Compton again, the winger picked out Monkhouse at the far post who headed the ball back across the goal line only for it to be belted clear of danger by a relieved City defender.
Cooper’s men had York rattled as the game neared its end as they threw everything forward in the search for a late winner but it was not to be and the game finished 0-0.
